This Eastern Orthodox cross is exquisite. The cross is heavy sterling silver,with cognac amber stones at the end of each "bar". Amber is itself afascinating gemstone. It is the fossilized sap of an ancient pinetree,and sometimes contains insects, or leaves within the stone. There areonly a few areas of the world where amber may be found. The Baltic Seais one such place, and lovely amber gems come from there.The Eastern (or Russian) Orthodox cross is also called the St. Andrew cross.It is characterized with three bars across the upright bar. The top one isthe sign above Christ's head, stating "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews"in three languages. The middle bar is familiar as the one to which Christ'shands were nailed. The bottom bar is a footrest, which is tilted up towardthe thief who asked Jesus to remember him in His kingdom. The other end ofthe footrest tilts down toward the thief who did not repent, representing hisdescent into hell.
